Attending Support and Discussion Groups can be one of the best sources of support. They can give someone a safe environment to discuss caregiving experiences, learn strategies for coping and gain emotional support. San Rafael Parish will host a group, sponsored by Alzheimer's San Diego, on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month from 1:00-2:30 p.m. The group will meet in our Pastoral Center in Meeting Room F. Upcoming dates are: May 10, 24; June 14, 28; July 12, 26; and August 9, 23. Groups will range in size from 5 to 10 people. The overall feel of each group will vary and topics of conversation may shift as needs arise and experiences are shared. Every group leader has their own unique style in leading a group. We encourage you to attend a group at least 2 or 3 times to experience the benefits. Prior to attending, please call the Support and Discussion Group leader, giving you an opportunity to confirm the meeting, ask the leader questions, and find out if the group may be a good fit. San Rafael's Group Leader is Arlene Cawthorne, MIC, at (858)335-8880. For questions and information you may contact Rebecca De Campos, MSW, Support and Discussion Group Coordinator with Alzheimer's San Diego, at (858)966-3303 or email rdecampos@alzsd.org.

From The Pastor Header

Sunday, August 20, 2017

There is a bit of concern in Ireland right now.  With Great Britain’s vote to break away from the European Union (called Brexit) there is a huge question facing the Irish People.   As you may know Ireland is divided: The Irish Republic to the South and the six counties of Ulster in Northern Ireland that is part of Great Britain.  Over the centuries a lot of blood has been shed in that part of the world over sectarian issues but over the past several years the situation has calmed down considerably.  It is now easy to cross from the Republic to Northern Ireland without border police, military checkpoints, or car searches hindering the process.  The fear now is that when Britain does actually succeed in withdrawing from the European Union taking with it the EU’s “open borders” agreements will that affect the border in Ireland?  Thoughtful people hope and pray that a reasonable agreement can be made to maintain things as they are rather than return to more closed borders which would only ignite the sectarian sentiments of the past driving a wedge in the understanding of what it means to be Irish.  It’s a very complicated issue.

Borders are human devised boundaries that separate political entities.  Sometimes people of the same culture are divided by borders that set up artificial, political boundaries between them.  Part of the problems of the Middle East stem from the artificially contrived borders imposed on that part of the world by the British at the end of World War I to carve up the former Ottoman Empire.  Israel and Palestine are divided by a huge, snake like separation wall that cuts off families from one another and establishes a fortress mentality that is not helpful to anyone.  In our own country what were once colonies of the British Empire argued over state boundaries when we gained independence, and even today politicians will gerrymander districts in order to achieve greater political clout over their opponents.

Our Scriptures today remind us that even though we humans like to carve up God’s world into political safe zones by establishing borders that separate rather than unite, God looks and works beyond what we can see.  Through the prophet Isaiah, God reminds us that He is God of all people, of all places, at all times, without distinction.  St. Paul goes out on a limb to evangelize the Gentiles and God has mercy on all.  The Canaanite woman in the gospel of Matthew takes a huge chance by approaching Jesus, a Jew, asking for help.  Despite the fact that the disciples wanted to chase her away Jesus called her forward, tested her faith and then answered her plea.  No one is excluded from God’s mercy.

Most times boundaries and borders are necessary for good order and security of a people.  Never, though, are spiritual boundaries of benefit to people who seek to do God’s will in their lives.  Why should anyone think that God loves them more than others, or that they alone know all there is to know about God?  God is not a “pet” to be kept in a box or cage to bring out and play with when we need to be amused.  God is here for all of us, like it or not, and we are called to share Him by the witness of our lives.

Msgr. Dennis L. Mikulanis, Pastor
