CARING FOR WHOLE PERSON MINISTRY (CWP)

“You matter because you are you.  You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but to live until you die.” ~ Dame Cicely Saunders

Caring for the Whole Person is a parish-based ministry responding to a vocation of service where the members provide support and their presence to those individuals and their families who are facing serious illness or end of life challenges.  Pope Francis has stated: “In order to promote the effective inclusion of sick people in the Christian community and to inspire in them a strong sense of belonging, pastoral care – which is inclusive – is necessary in parishes and associations.  It is a matter of truly esteeming the presence and witness of individuals who are frail and suffering, not only as recipients of the work of evangelization, but also as active subjects in this apostolic endeavor.”

This ministry preserves dignity and meaning while promoting a culture of inclusion in our San Rafael community where those sick or dying people feel loved, wanted, and worthy.   It helps parishioners find meaning and self-worth and purpose in their lives during these difficult times.  If you are interested or have questions, please call Kathy Lunardi (619-988-6533).

“Bear one another’s burdens.”  Galatians 6:2

MOTHER’S GROUP | New to the parish?  Want to make new friends?  Don’t miss this!  San Rafael is beginning a Mother’s Group for the stay at home moms in our parish.  Mother’s Group is designed to support moms in a society that doesn’t.  God gives us the gift of motherhood as a vocation but He doesn’t include an instruction manual. Mother’s Group is a place to share our issues in raising Catholic children; in being a wife and dealing with our own parents.  We talk about Catholic traditions in our home, the upcoming gospel and holidays.  We pray for one another; we encourage one another and are part of one another’s lives!  Do you want to be in on the new Mother’s Group?  Space is limited and child care is provided.  We will choose the day when we get responses.  Please call Bev at (858)353-0579.

MAKING THE MOST OUT OF ADVENT | Come and learn all about the season of Advent: What do all the colors represent?  What is the meaning of the Advent wreath?  What are the customs of the Advent season?  What is Advent actually celebrating?  And much, much more….  The whole parish is invited to our first Adult Education night to learn about the colors, customs, practices, foods, teachings, and traditions of the season of Advent taught by members of our parish RCIA team.  It all happens on Tuesday, November 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall.  There is no registration needed, just come join us, and no cost (a free will offering can be made if desired).  We look forward to seeing you there!  Come and make this Advent come alive for you and your family!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MONTHLY RECYCLING | Recycle efforts have raised well over $35,000 since the Knights of Columbus began the effort to raise money and reduce waste through recycling.  Money collected goes toward worth Catholic Charities such as St. Francis Mission School, a school in Mississippi.  Parishioners are urged to bring their aluminum cans, plastic and glass bottles to the Church parking lot on the next recycle date – Sunday, December 5th, as usual.

MONTHLY K of C PANCAKE BREAKFAST | Sunday, December 12th, the Knights of Columbus will host their monthly Pancake Breakfast in the Parish Hall.  Please note the change of date this month to accommodate Breakfast with Santa on the 5th .  Along with pancakes you will find scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage, biscuits and gravy, and drinks.  Enjoy food and fellowship!

LIFE CHOICES CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE | It’s a baby shower for the unborn at Life Choices Pregnancy Center.  This center has been a life source for young women in the community contemplating abortion.  Women’s Fellowship invites everyone to visit the decorated Christmas tree which will be located in the church foyer the entire month of December.  Each tag on the tree suggests an item which is greatly needed at the Life Choices Pregnancy Center.  Special Requests this year include:  Baby shampoo, Legos, baby wipes, wash cloths and towels, and electric breast pumps by Medela.  Please consider donating Amazon, Target, Walmart, Costco, and grocery gift cards.  Direct Financial Donations may be made by scanning the QR Code or writing a check to “Life Choices.”  Please place all unwrapped gifts in the adjacent bassinet.  This is a wonderful opportunity to show your Christmas Spirit to those who need and will appreciate your help.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA | It’s back!  Sunday morning, December 5th, the San Rafael Men’s Club will host its annual Breakfast with Santa event in the parish hall.  Unfortunately, this event was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic but we’re excited that the Men’s Club will be once again hosting coffee and donuts and family photos with Santa Claus!  This year is a DIY photo opportunity.  Bring your own camera or smart phone and someone from the Men’s Club will take your family photo with Santa.  Please come out for this annual tradition to bring some Christmas cheer to the children of the parish!

FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. DENNIS

Once Halloween is over we all know it’s full steam ahead.  The “Holiday Season” can be seen in the distance rushing its way toward us like a tsunami and once Thanksgiving comes and goes the flood washes ashore.  It’s pretty sad, though to see the stores ignoring Thanksgiving, all decked out for Christmas right after Halloween relegating Thanksgiving Day almost to an afterthought: “Oh.  Yeah.  Let’s “gobble” down a big meal before heading out to start our Christmas shopping!  Poor Thanksgiving Day.  The real tragedy, though, is how Advent gets lost in our preparations for Christmas.  Every day can’t be Christmas Day and during these next four weeks we should take time for some quiet reflection and preparation before celebrating the Nativity of our Lord.  Of course, we need to be careful not to get blindsided and have Christmas Day arrive with us totally unprepared (is that even possible?) but we also need to be careful not to arrive at Christmas Day so mentally, physically, spiritually exhausted that we can’t enjoy what we are meant to celebrate.

During Advent try to carve out some time to help yourself make a good spiritual preparation for Christmas.  In the first place, focus on the Reason for the Season – the birth of Christ.   How about this?  Send actual Christmas cards and skip the computer generated mass mailing.  Yeah, I know it takes time but that’s part of the gift of Christmas.  Let your Christmas cards be about the birth of Jesus rather than the jolly old elf or, worse, some bird picking at berries on a snow covered bush.  Use the religious Christmas stamps on your cards when you mail them.   Make an Advent Wreath for your home and put it on the dining room table.  Light the appropriate candle for each week as you say grace before dinner (and make an effort to have meals together in the first place!).  Be sure to blow the candle out after the prayer or soon you won’t have any candle left.  That means, of course, that you don’t rush through grace before meals.  At the end of each day make a selection from the Bible and read that passage.  Since the Readings for Daily Mass are printed in the Sunday bulletin just select one of them to read (which means you have to take a bulletin home with you).  Reflect on the “Question of the Week” that’s also in the bulletin.  When it comes time to do the Christmas shopping try to make it an enjoyable experience – despite other cranky shoppers who do anything but pass “smile after smile” as they go about their business.  When you encounter such a person, give that old grinch a smile of your own and hope his/heart “grows three sizes that day.”  Be sure to go to confession during Advent as well.  Check the bulletin for the times of Penance Services in the Deanery (San Rafael’s is on December 7th at 7:00 p.m.)

Once the tree is up in your home – when evening comes turn off all the lights except those on the tree, put on some religious Christmas carols and just sit and look at the tree.  Who isn’t refreshed by that?

Advent and the run to Christmas doesn’t have to be a spirit crushing exercise in mercantile madness.  Make Advent what it is meant to be.  A time of spiritual preparation for the birth of the Messiah, the Christ, the Redeemer, the Savior, the HOPE of the world!
