They can give someone a safe environment to discuss caregiving experiences, learn strategies for coping and gain emotional support. San Rafael Parish will host a group, sponsored by Alzheimer's San Diego, on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month from 1:00-2:30 p.m. The group will meet in our Pastoral Center in Meeting Room F. Upcoming dates are: May 10, 24; June 14, 28; July 12, 26; and August 9, 23. Groups will range in size from 5 to 10 people. The overall feel of each group will vary and topics of conversation may shift as needs arise and experiences are shared. Every group leader has their own unique style in leading a group. We encourage you to attend a group at least 2 or 3 times to experience the benefits. Prior to attending, please call the Support and Discussion Group leader, giving you an opportunity to confirm the meeting, ask the leader questions, and find out if the group may be a good fit. San Rafael's Group Leader is Arlene Cawthorne, MIC, at (858)335-8880. A reading from St. James: “If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well’ but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it?” Our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society asks your help in providing NEW underwear, NEW socks and NEW men’s jeans to share with the poor through Fr. Joe’s in downtown San Diego, and Brother Benno’s in Oceanside. You are always so generous with your contributions, we feel we can share the donations between the two foundations and help many more during this year of Mercy. Our collection will be the weekend of September 14 & 15, so that no one at Fr. Joe’s nor Brother Benno’s receives "hand me downs" this coming Christmas. Please bring your donations to Mass that weekend and deposit them in the vestibule of the church. We will need items for children and adults, male and female all sizes and shapes and colors! We will also accept small toys and gift cards. Thank you and may God bless you all for your continued generosity to the poor!

0010 High Res

FROM THE DESK OF FR. SHOWRI
(Msgr. Dennis is away from the office until September 30th.)

Going by car through our hilly roads, we see a number of signboards warning drivers of dangers ahead, “Sharp Turn,” Narrow Culvert,” “Men at Work” and so on.  The signs repeat themselves time and again; yet, no driver is so foolish as to get angry on account of them.  On the contrary, they are grateful, since the signs help them avoid accidents.

In a similar way, Christians on their way to heaven meet with a number of dangers, and the Church, repeatedly warns her children against them.  There is one particular danger against which the Church repeatedly warns us in our Sunday readings.  The danger of riches!  The Church is only too aware that many a Christian puts his eternal salvation in jeopardy because of wealth wrongly acquired or badly used.

As we have often said, Luke wrote his Gospel for Christians, most of whom had been pagans before.  Things in those days were no different from what they are in our own.  Those Christians were tempted to make the acquiring of money the main purpose their lives.  No other Gospel stresses the danger of riches so much as that of Luke.

He dedicates the whole chapter 16, from which today’s Gospel has been taken, to guide Christians in the use of money.  To that purpose Luke brings in two parables of Jesus: The parable of the unfaithful manager narrated in today’s Gospel (Lk. 16, 1-8), and the parable of the rich man and Lazarus about which we shall hear next Sunday (Lk. 16, 19-31).

In the parable of the dishonest manager we see that the Master is praising the dishonest Steward.  We may be surprised to see that he is praised by the Master.  Have you ever thought of why a person who is not just and honest is praised for his cleverness in cheating his master?  My dear friends, what is being praised by the master is not the dishonesty of the steward but his astuteness in thinking and securing his future.  The steward, when asked to submit the accounts, understood that he would be fired that day so he began to think about his future.  Therefore he mismanaged the accounts by reducing the amounts that debtors had to pay to his master.  He made them his friends therefore when he is fired they would help him to live.

The point that Luke is conveying here is that we need to think about our future.  We are also stewards in this life.  What will be my future once I die and work towards securing that life by using all the means that I have?  That means we need to make use of this God given life, talents, our wealth in order to secure our eternal life.  We need to be clever and astute like the children of the world and share our all that we have with the poor and needy.  In securing a place in God’s Kingdom, put in at least as much effort as people without faith put in acquiring wealth, since heaven is a far greater treasure that the most precious treasure on earth.

“The man who can be trusted in little things can be trusted in great things.”  This is a fact of life.  People, who have been faithful in lower jobs, are promoted to higher ones.  In the estimation of Jesus, “money and possessions” which we consider “important and great,” are to be considered “little”, of no account; while the truly great, important thing, the one that really matters, is “Eternal Life.”  God will grant “the great thing,” eternal life, only to those who make good use of the “little things,”  of whatever they possess on earth.

“If you cannot be trusted with what is not yours, who will give you what is your very own?”  This saying of Jesus does not appear clear at first sight, and yet, it contains a deep meaning.  Money and possessions are not really ours.  God gives them to us “on loan.”  We are not owners but stewards of whatever we possess, and our stewardship will end when we die.  What is really ours is “eternal life,” a life with God obtained for us by the merits of the passion death and resurrection of our Lord.  But God will not entrust us with what He means to be really ours, unless we have been proved faithful in dealing with the money and possessions received on loan from Him.

Money and possessions are gifts from God, and hence, good things in themselves.  But if not made use of in accordance with God’s plans, they turn dangerous.  Be always on your guard against greed.
