0008 High Res

FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. DENNIS

“Lord have mercy.  Christ have mercy.  Lord have mercy.”  How often do we say such a thing in our lives other than at every Mass we attend?  It is a very simple but beautiful prayer of faith in the goodness of God.  We are still basking in the glow of the Resurrection of Christ from the dead and we look back on the recent events with awe-struck wonder at God’s unfathomable love for us.  We watched Jesus trudge through the streets of Jerusalem carrying His cross where He met His mother and the women of Jerusalem, who most likely were disciples of His and, despite His agony, His concern was for them and their own sorrow.  As He hung there nailed to the cross and dying His care was for the good thief who begged God’s mercy.  He turned His attention to John and entrusted His Blessed Mother to the Apostle in an act of loving care of a son for His mother.  Just before He breathed His last He begged the Father not to blame His killers: “Father, forgive them.  They know not what they do.”  Who else enduring such agony would show that the most of his concern was for others and not himself?  Christ shows us the virtue of mercy in the midst of agony which we all should note and try to imitate.   “Lord have mercy” is not just a plea on our part for forgiveness of our sins but it is a cry for help of how we are to live our lives.

This first Sunday after Easter was named by St. Pope John Paul II as Divine Mercy Sunday after the devotion begun by Sister Faustina Kowalska who had private revelations of the mercy of God embracing the world.  There has never been a time when Divine Mercy was not needed.  Just consider the circumstances of war-torn Europe throughout the ages with one allegedly Christian country after another rushing off to imprison or slaughter another allegedly Christian country.  Lord have mercy!  Witness the rapid collapse of the Church in Catholic Ireland these past few years where a country that sent thousands of missionaries to evangelize the world could ordain only one priest last year in the entire country.  Christ have mercy!  One can’t miss the steady crumbling of the moral base in our own country where even reputed Catholics in positions of political leadership appear to be more in league with the forces of darkness rather than the forces of light.  Lord have mercy!  Note the divisions and tensions between liberals and conservatives in our own Church that rip at the fabric of who we are, each trying to promote his/her own agenda rather than that of Christ.  Christ have mercy!

God has proven His love for us in so many countless ways that we tend to take it for granted.  However, when we stop and look around and see the mess humanity makes of the world we cannot help but say “Lod have mercy; Christ have mercy; Lord have mercy.”

This is Divine Mercy Sunday.  Let us keep fresh in our minds the ultimate act of mercy performed by Jesus on the cross and try our best to bring the world that message of love, reconciliation and peace.  Forgive an enemy.  Mend a quarrel.  Respond to the poor.  Pray for our political leaders to do what is right and not just politically expedient.  Lord have mercy!  Christ have mercy!  Lord have mercy – and help us to show it to the world.
