DO YOU WISH YOU KNEW MORE ABOUT YOUR FAITH? | For many Catholics, faith formation stopped when we were children in CCD or in youth group.  Now that you’re an adult, do you wish you knew more about the fundamentals of our faith?  Starting after Easter and running to Pentecost, Deacon Mike will present five classes (one night a week, for about an hour each time) covering:

  • The Fundamental Nature of God -
  • in 50 minutes, you will understand the Trinity
  • Sacraments – What they are, What they do, Why we care.
  • The Bible – We will answer this question:
  • Should the Bible be taken literally?
  • Prayer – Why should we pray?
  • Can we really change God’s mind through prayer?
  • Covenants – What are the Old Testament Covenants,
  • and How Are They Fulfilled in Jesus?

Classes will meet at 7:00 p.m. in in the Parish Hall Building on May 5, May 12, and May 26 and in Meeting Rooms H & I in the Pastoral Center Building on May 19th.  For more information, please contact Deacon Mike by email at: deaconmike@sanrafaelparish.org.

WHY DO CATHOLICS DO THAT?  FAITH STUDY | The Catholic Church is the oldest and original Christian community.  For that reason we have a rich history and spirituality that we do not always fully understand or appreciate.  In this series, designed for both new and seasoned Catholics (as well as for curious non-Catholics) we look at certain particularly Catholic things and explain their origin and purpose.  We will cover the following topics:

  • Why do Catholics make the Sign of the Cross/
  • Why are Catholic Bibles larger than Protestant Bibles?
  • Why do Catholics follow Apostolic Tradition?
  • Why do Catholics worship using seven sacraments?
  • Why do Catholics believe in Jesus’ Real Presence in the Eucharist?
  • What is the purpose of Catholics using holy water and other sacramentals?
  • Why are Catholics led by the pope?
  • Why do Catholics honor Mary and the Saints so much?
  • Why do Catholics believe in Purgatory?

Come and renew and expand your faith.  There are two choices (same class):

Monday evenings, starting April 25th at 6:30 p.m. in Meeting Rooms H & I in the Pastoral Center Building,

OR Wednesday mornings, starting April 27th at 9:30 a.m. in Meeting Rooms H & I in the Pastoral Center Building

There is no registration, just come join us, and no cost (a free will offering can be made if desired).  We look forward to seeing you there! Come and see how exciting it is to be Catholic!

YOU ARE INVITED | Catholic Widows and Widowers will attend the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 22nd, as a group.  Luncheon will follow at Chicken Charlie’s Table.  RSVP necessary for lunch reservation. Phone (858)692-6734 or text Agnes (858)335-3567.  Widows  and widowers of this parish are invited to join us if interested in our group.

0008 High Res

FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. DENNIS

It’s remarkable, really.  We claim to be a nation of laws with basic respect for every individual.  Some used to use the term “salad bowl” to describe us, meaning that we come from every corner of the earth with our unique identities to nourish the nation and the world.  More recently people have opted to use a “stew” as a description where everything blends together and any unique identity is lost.  “Salad Bowl” is still a more appropriate description of US as a people.  With the controversies over race relations and cultural differences at the forefront there is no way we can all blend together and lose our unique identities while still providing a nourishing image for the world.  Of course, this means that everyone must respect each other and treat one another as equals in the salad if we are going to be effective.  Sadly, that’s not always the case and recently the “salad” seems to have begun to wilt and lose its appeal.   “You don’t agree with me?  Well, let me tell you what an idiot you are!”  “You oppose my point of view?  Let me smash you in the face!”  “You think you have the right to promote your agenda over mine?  Well, I will holler and stomp and scream and curse and disrupt and tell you and the world I think you’re the worst kind of fool!”  Is this a false narrative?  Just read the national news and see it’s not.

Perhaps the greatest test of our moral grounds as a nation comes over the issue of abortion and little else draws such heat.  For some, abortion (the murder of a child in the womb of its mother) is an absolute right.  Some states allow the killing of the child practically up to the moment of birth, and some “Catholic” politicians promote that point of view.  Well, if the child isn’t perfect, who wants it?  Get rid of it, take the easy way out is their mantra.  Our Church, however, disagrees completely with that point of view as it strips the child in its mother’s womb of any sense of human dignity as child of God.  Just tell a pro-abortionist (not pro-choice, pro-abortion) that you disagree with him/her and get ready for a fusillade of hateful rhetoric.  Just look at what is happening now over the leaked draft of the Supreme Court ruling in the Dobbs case.  The Catholic Bishops of the State of California recently issued this statement: “The leak of the draft Supreme Court ruling in the Dobbs case triggered the governor and California legislative leadership to announce its intent to create a California constitutional amendment to protect the right to abortion.  This will destroy lives, families, and significantly limit the ability of the Catholic Church in California to protect the unborn.  This is the moment for the Church and its 12 million Catholics to engage with their communities to actively and publicly oppose this amendment, and fulfill our baptismal responsibility to protect life at every stage, and at every opportunity.”  Along with this came a warning to Catholic parishes that pro-abortion groups were planning disrupt Mass at Catholic Churches.

It’s remarkable, really.  We claim to be a nation of laws with basic respect for every individual – unless, of course, a person is pro-life rather than pro-abortion.  No Catholic can say to be pro-abortion and claim to be a true, practicing, faithful Roman Catholic.  It’s time to take a stand!  WRITE to your state legislator and the governor and let them know!
