Attending Support and Discussion Groups can be one of the best sources of support. They can give someone a safe environment to discuss caregiving experiences, learn strategies for coping and gain emotional support. San Rafael Parish will host a group, sponsored by Alzheimer's San Diego, on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month from 1:00-2:30 p.m. The group will meet in our Pastoral Center in Meeting Room F. Upcoming dates are: May 10, 24; June 14, 28; July 12, 26; and August 9, 23. Groups will range in size from 5 to 10 people. The overall feel of each group will vary and topics of conversation may shift as needs arise and experiences are shared. Every group leader has their own unique style in leading a group. We encourage you to attend a group at least 2 or 3 times to experience the benefits. Prior to attending, please call the Support and Discussion Group leader, giving you an opportunity to confirm the meeting, ask the leader questions, and find out if the group may be a good fit. San Rafael's Group Leader is Arlene Cawthorne, MIC, at (858)335-8880. For questions and information you may contact Rebecca De Campos, MSW, Support and Discussion Group Coordinator with Alzheimer's San Diego, at (858)966-3303 or email rdecampos@alzsd.org.

Time: 1:00 pm

From The Pastor Header

Sunday, December 17, 2017

In the dry, sandy desert areas of the world on every continent there is a weather phenomenon called a haboob.  Haboob is an Arabic word and it literally means blasting or drifting.  In actuality it is a huge sandstorm that is most often caused by the collapse of a thunderstorm or a cold front moving in and colliding with hot weather (Wikipedia is good for some things!).  Although we haven’t witnessed a haboob in Southern California we do see them reported periodically in and around Phoenix, Arizona.  They’re remarkable!   They’re HUGE sandstorms that blow in from the desert much like the dust storms in the Midwest during the 1930’s.  Huge clouds of dust block the sun and suck clean air from the atmosphere as it advances.  You might even have seen haboobs depicted in movies (Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy).  When people see a haboob coming they get out of the way and take shelter as quickly as they can for fear of being blinded and suffocated from all that is good.

As we begin the third week of Advent don’t you feel like you’re running as fast as you can ahead of a haboob that threatens to overwhelm you?  Oh, there’s so much to do with decorating and shopping and wrapping and parties and frazzled nerves and not enough time … STOP!  Just let me rest a bit.  Let me find shelter from the haboob and be able to breathe for a while.

It’s a shame that we’ve let the Advent Season become a haboob in our lives.  In self-defense there are some who refuse to acknowledge the nearness of Christmas by refusing to decorate or party “because it’s Advent, not Christmas.”   Unfortunately, though, those liturgical purists give rise to the Ebenezer Scrooge within us.  The strict “Adventist” though liturgically and theologically on solid ground is what lets the haboob of harried preparations and exhausting busyness overcome us blinding us to the simple joys that this Season is supposed to bring.

Let’s turn the tables.  Let’s make every effort to find time to stop, relax and enjoy what we can of this Advent when we’re supposed to be reflecting on the wonderful message of God’s love for us in the Nativity of Jesus.  As we read the Scriptures given to us for this week feel the hope that the Prophet Isaiah brings; feel the wisdom that St. Paul brings to the Thessalonians as he reminds us of the way we ought to behave as Christians; feel the excitement that John records in his gospel by the witness of John the Baptist who proclaims that the Messiah is near at hand!

Today we light the third candle of the Advent Wreath and we wear rose colored vestments to remind us that our time of waiting and preparation is almost over. Do what needs to get done in preparing for Christmas but don’t trip in the process and let the haboob of busy-ness and other people’s expectations blind you from the reason for the Season, God’s love for us in Christ.

Msgr. Dennis L. Mikulanis, S.T.D.
