Attending Support and Discussion Groups can be one of the best sources of support. They can give someone a safe environment to discuss caregiving experiences, learn strategies for coping and gain emotional support. San Rafael Parish will host a group, sponsored by Alzheimer's San Diego, on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month from 1:00-2:30 p.m. The group will meet in our Pastoral Center in Meeting Room F. Upcoming dates are: May 10, 24; June 14, 28; July 12, 26; and August 9, 23. Groups will range in size from 5 to 10 people. The overall feel of each group will vary and topics of conversation may shift as needs arise and experiences are shared. Every group leader has their own unique style in leading a group. We encourage you to attend a group at least 2 or 3 times to experience the benefits. Prior to attending, please call the Support and Discussion Group leader, giving you an opportunity to confirm the meeting, ask the leader questions, and find out if the group may be a good fit. UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS

THANKSGIVING SERVICE PROJECT | Thank you to all of the students and families who helped with the Middle Grades Thanksgiving Meal in a Bag service project, and to everyone who donated food, gift cards, and money to support this project.  Thank you also to the Romero family who donated turkeys and additional food.  Everyone’s combined generosity helped us provide food for more than 150 families in our community.  What a wonderful way to spread Christ’s love and compassion this Thanksgiving!

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL | Our Mission Statement:  A network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul invites you to our next monthly meeting on Monday, November 18, at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room J in the Pastoral Center Building.  If you came to the informational meeting last month and would still like to learn more about our conference, please join us.  We thank all of you who donate regularly and please know that your donations contribute to housing, food and needed support for many of our friends and neighbors.  Our monthly collection will be November 23-24.  Thank you and God Bless!

OLIVE WOOD RELIGIOUS GOODS SALE | Beautiful handcrafted olive wood carvings from Bethlehem will be on sale in the parish hall the weekend of November 30-December 1 after all Masses.  The rosaries, jewelry and hand carved statues and crucifixes are made by our Christian brothers and sisters in the Holy Land.  For these Christians, the selling of their handcrafted items is to spread the word of Jesus, a process they started two thousand years ago.  This has become an industry of great importance to the local people who rely on it for their livelihood.  The prolonged occupation of Bethlehem has adversely affected their customers.  Proceeds from their sales go to the families who carved the statues and will help these followers of Jesus to remain in the Holy Land.

BABY SHOWER FOR THE UNBORN | It’s a baby shower for the unborn at Life Choices Pregnancy Center.  This center has been a life source for young women in the community contemplating abortion.  Women’s Fellowship invites everyone to visit the decorated Christmas tree which will be located in the church foyer the entire month of December 2019.  The tags on the tree will give numerous suggestions from rattles and teething rings to all types of clothes (size 0 to 4x) and larger items (car seats, high chairs, etc.).  Gift cards and checks made out to “Life Choices” are also a good choice.  Please place all unwrapped gifts in the adjacent bassinet.  This is a wonderful opportunity to project your Christmas Spirit to those who need and will appreciate your help.

“KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS” | Religious Christmas cards will be available from the Knights of Columbus again this year.  They will be sold either in front of the church or in the parish hall during coffee and donuts the weekends of November 30-December 1 and December 7-8.   Many of your old favorites and a few new card designs have been added, so please come and see the selection and remember to “Keep Christ in Christmas.”

COME HAVE BREAKFAST WITH SANTA | On Sunday morning, Dec 8, the San Rafael Men’s Club will host its third annual Breakfast With Santa event in the parish hall. The Men’s Club will be hosting  breakfast and photos with Santa Claus. The breakfast menu includes baked French toast, sausages, fruit, juice, hot chocolate, and for the traditionalists, of course coffee and donuts. Santa will be posing for pictures with children of the parish in his living room. For more information and registration please go to the following link: http://bit.ly/BreakfastWithSanta2019.

For its upcoming Breakfast With Santa Event on December 8, 2019, the Men’s Club needs a few more Christmas decorations to brighten up Santa’s living room and train room.  Specifically needed are white icicle lights, ornaments, garland, a couple of small nativity sets, and small Christmas blow up decorations. It would be greatly appreciated if you could donate any of the above items to enhance the festive experience of Breakfast With Santa. Donations should be dropped off at the parish office. Thank you.

WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP CHRISTMAS TEA | Christmas will be upon us in no time and that means we have a lovely Christmas Tea planned to brighten our spirits!  Wear your holiday finery and treat yourself to a special evening filled with friends and new acquaintances.  A new light dinner menu will be served in a fairyland setting in the Parish Hall, while listening to live entertainment.  The Tea will be held Monday, December 9, at 6:00 p.m.  Cost: $25.  All ladies of the parish are welcome and you may now invite guests.  Everyone must have a pre-paid reservation to attend the Tea.  Don’t wait, send in your check today.  Questions?  Email Jeanne.bellastanza@gmail.com.  Make out your $25 check to “SRCCWF” and mail to Jeanne Obenchain, 1501 India Street #220, San Diego CA 92101.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SCHOLARSHIPS | The Knights of Columbus from San Rafael are offering five scholarships this year ranging from $500.00 to $1,000.00 depending upon the number of applications and the budget.  For more information and application forms, please contact the parish office.  The deadline to submit your application is April 1, 2020.   The five scholarships are: Matt Herriman Memorial Scholarship, Caroline E. Cox Memorial Scholarship, Catholic University Scholarship, Community College Scholarship and Vocational / Trade School Scholarship.

0010 High Res

FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. DENNIS

In college I had a double major – Philosophy and History.   History (because I wanted to) and Philosophy – which, since I was in the seminary, I had to as a precursor to the study of theology.  I graduated with Honors in both majors.  I still love the study of History and most casual reading I do is in this field.  Philosophy did help prepare me for the study of Theology but today I glean the most interesting philosophy (forgive me) from the comic pages of the San Diego Union Tribune.  A few weeks ago the Comic Strip MUTTS had one character ask another: “Hey Jules, what’cha doing?”  Jules responded with “I’ve started an ‘Endangered List.’”  “What’s on it?” he was asked, to which Jules answered: “Empathy, compassion, kindness, sympathy, decency, sensitivity, integrity, altruism, affection, benevolence, heart, tenderness, love, humanity, charity, grace, courtesy, tolerance, mercy, intelligence, leniency, understanding, common sense, goodwill, patience, wisdom …” leaving off with the assumption that a lot more can be found than was possible to list within the confines of the strip.  Immediately following was the strip PEARLS BEFORE SWINE wherein the characters are playing the game Jenga, where a structure is made of blocks and one at a time a block is pulled away, the object of which is to keep the structure standing and not fall over.  Well, one characters says how much the game Jenga reminds him of life because we start out on a solid foundation until one thing after another is taken away until so much is taken away that everything collapses!  “Next time Candyland” is the response of another; a facile solution to a complex situation.

Just read the paper, listen to the news, read all of those ridiculous blogs to which so many are addicted, follow Facebook and Twitter religiously responding to every comment – and truly it seems like all of the virtues which comprise human decency are endangered.  Our human dignity is taken away one little bit at a time until we have been so stripped of what is good and true everything comes tumbling down.

As we approach the end of the liturgical year and look back on how we have attempted to live our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ how much of the above relates to us?  There are groups whose members go out of their way to keep animal species or plants from extinction, but how committed are we as Christians to keep the human virtues that give breath to the presence of God in each of us alive?  We all know people and have situations that annoy us, but don’t forget we most likely annoy others as well.  If we want a world where the true peace of God reigns supreme then it is incumbent upon us to work to prevent the extinction of the virtues of decency and honor that separate us from the animal world.

In one of his writings Pope Leo the Great wrote: “Agnosce Chrisitianae Dignitatem Tuam” (Know O Christian Your Dignity).  KNOW O CHRISTIAN YOUR DIGNITY.

Let’s stop the name calling, the rancor, the bitterness, the actions which gradually take away the dignity of every person and cause the structure to come tumbling down.  The comic strips a few weeks ago aren’t that far from the lessons of today’s Readings from the Sacred Scriptures.  When we hear what the Lord has to say does it go in one ear and out the other, or do we work to “glorify the Lord by our lives” after receiving Him in the Eucharist, the Holy Communion, which binds us together as one?
