Attending Support and Discussion Groups can be one of the best sources of support. They can give someone a safe environment to discuss caregiving experiences, learn strategies for coping and gain emotional support. San Rafael Parish will host a group, sponsored by Alzheimer's San Diego, on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month from 1:00-2:30 p.m. The group will meet in our Pastoral Center in Meeting Room F. Upcoming dates are: May 10, 24; June 14, 28; July 12, 26; and August 9, 23. Groups will range in size from 5 to 10 people. The overall feel of each group will vary and topics of conversation may shift as needs arise and experiences are shared. Every group leader has their own unique style in leading a group. We encourage you to attend a group at least 2 or 3 times to experience the benefits. Prior to attending, please call the Support and Discussion Group leader, giving you an opportunity to confirm the meeting, ask the leader questions, and find out if the group may be a good fit. UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS

OLIVE WOOD RELIGIOUS GOODS SALE | Beautiful handcrafted olive wood carvings from Bethlehem will be on sale the weekend of November 24-25 after all Masses.  The rosaries, jewelry, hand carved statues and crucifixes are made by fellows Christians in the Holy Land.  For these Christians the purpose of making such handcrafted items is to spread the word of Jesus, a process they started two thousand years ago.  This has become an industry of great importance to the local people who rely on it for their livelihood.  The prolonged occupation of Bethlehem has adversely affected their customers – pilgrims who our Christian brethren in the Holy Land depend on for sales.  Proceeds from sales go to the families who carve the statues and will help these followers of Jesus to remain in the Holy Land.

LIFE CHOICES CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE | It’s a baby shower for the unborn at Life Choices Pregnancy Center.  This center has been a life source for young women in the community contemplating abortion.  Women’s Fellowship invites everyone to visit the decorated Christmas tree which will be located in the church foyer the entire month of December 2018.  The tags on the tree will give numerous suggestions from rattles and teething rings to all types of clothes (size 0 to 4x) and larger items (car seats, high chairs, etc.).  Gift cards and checks made out to “Life Choices” are also a good choice.  Please place all unwrapped gifts in the adjacent bassinet.  This is a wonderful opportunity to project your Christmas Spirit to those who need and will appreciate your help.

COME HAVE BREAKFAST WITH SANTA | On Sunday morning, December 2nd, the San Rafael Men’s Club is continuing with its annual tradition of hosting pictures with Santa Claus, but this year with a few exciting changes!  The Men’s Club will be hosting breakfast with Santa that will include a menu of French toast, sausages, fruit, juice, hot chocolate and for the traditionalists, of course coffee and donuts.  Santa will be posing for pictures with children of the parish in his newly decorated living room in the parish hall.  Please mark December 2nd on your calendars and come visit Santa!

0010 High Res

FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. DENNIS

There is a current (and last) season of a television program called “Versailles” which documents the building of the Royal Palace of Versailles by King Louis XIV from a “humble” hunting lodge to the most magnificent palace in Europe.  Of course, once it was built the English, the Russians, the Bavarians, the Austrians all had to have palaces to equal if not rival Versailles.  Today most of those royal palaces are museums that we common folk can tour and marvel at the lavish spending that went in to them, oftentimes while the tax paying people of the country nearly starved.  In fact, the outrageous spending of King Louis XVI and The Empress Marie Antoinette was a main cause of the French Revolution, especially since France practically went bankrupt financing the American Revolution to poke a stick in the eye to the English.  Even today monarchs in Europe such as England, Sweden and Norway live in huge palaces that they open to the public at certain time of year (for a fee, of course, which helps maintain the palaces) to give the people a glimpse of how their Heads of State live.  Walking through the palaces a person can have several thoughts ranging from “Wouldn’t it be great to live here?” to “I’d hate to have to dust and vacuum this place” to “What a waste of money!”  Most of the time, though, the royal palaces were displays not only of wealth but of power which were intended to raise the feeling of national pride of the people.  Unfortunately, that didn’t quite turn out the way it was expected.

Heads of State, be they monarchs, prime ministers or presidents are supposed to serve one main purpose: to represent the people they have been called to serve.  How many actually do that though as open and unbiased servants of all the people?  The very nature of politics expects certain perspectives to be promoted over others.  Consequently, those who provide leadership quite regularly stumble in their vocation.  Constitutional monarchies such as Great Britain, Sweden, Norway and the Low Countries provide a sense of stability when politics strains the nation, and people are happy with the monarchy so long as they don’t spend money lavishly and stay completely out of politics.  In effect, they become mere figureheads of the nation with little true authority.

There is only one monarch on whom the world can depend to be everything a Leader of the People is called to be.   There is only one monarch who is completely honest and truthful, who sincerely cares for all the people all the time, and to whom His subjects can turn with complete confidence that what is said and done will be the absolute best for everyone without exception.  That monarch is the one whom the Church celebrates today, Christ the King!  Christ the King doesn’t need a royal palace or a huge army to make His presence known; all He needs is the gospel which His loyal followers accept with sincere devotion and loyalty to His cause.

So, ask yourself: To whom do you pledge your top loyalty and devotion?  Is it to some political institution made of human construct, or is it to Christ the King who is, who was and who always will be the one to whom every Christian must give ultimate allegiance?
